No offense to her...but she is a congressperson -- one out of 400 some. I've never understood why she commands so much attention.

Because she’s an outlier, and because she triggers half the country.
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 21, 2021 11:24 AM |
Yes, she is pretty and is always speaking out...in front of the cameras. She's another one in which there isn't a camera she doesn't like. She gets more attention than she deserves.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 21, 2021 11:30 AM |
She doesn't command attention. She demands it.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 21, 2021 11:32 AM |
Like any good Karen would, R6.

She needs to dial it down.
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 21, 2021 11:36 AM |
Like all successful politicians, she's at heart just a grifting carnival barker.

[quote] She’s smart and pretty and progressive
I don't think that any of that is the reason for her being considered important. She has a vote within a tiny majority, so every vote, even hers counts. If the majority was just ten or twenty votes larger, she would be blissfully ignored.
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 21, 2021 11:42 AM |
She needs to keep her mouth shut about what people in other areas are doing. She represents one small section, not even the whole state.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 21, 2021 11:51 AM |
Just your typical young, female, Puerto Rican, congresswoman. I wish she was my daughter.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 21, 2021 11:54 AM |
Because she is brilliant and very, very savvy. I work with smart 20-somethings who all love her, as well they should.
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 21, 2021 11:55 AM |
She grabbed attention from the beginning. She's charismatic and a "star." Even my 87-year-old aunt in Belgium, who never even watches TV and doesn't follow US politics at all, knows who she is, even recognizing the initials.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 21, 2021 11:57 AM |
She knows she’s pretty, compared to the stuffy looking Fraus in Congress. She plays it up by wearing the makeup.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 21, 2021 12:00 PM |
She's pretty, but she's beginning to look a little long in the tooth. She's 31 y.o. now.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 21, 2021 12:02 PM |
She’s smart and articulate. She keeps the rightist Dems on their toes.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 21, 2021 12:07 PM |
It's mostly because she's a lightening rod for angry, uninformed right-wing jerk-offs. "Grrrrr did you hear what AOC said? She said Americans should have (insert basic social service this is common in the rest of the developed world). She's CRAZY. She's a COMMUNIST".
She's also famous for being a millennial congressperson.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 21, 2021 12:23 PM |
Big mouth; knows how to play to the camera.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 21, 2021 12:27 PM |
She looks more wall eyed to me lately. Maybe it’s my tv but lately she looks a little weird.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 21, 2021 1:05 PM |
She'll be president one day. Mark my words.

Because she built a nationwide political reputation and brand from nothing and beat a powerful Congressman in a come-from-behind race. She wasn’t rich, well-connected, the kind of whitebread suburban man with 2.5 kids who goes into politics, or related to other famous people. She is a rare self-made success story.
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 21, 2021 1:24 PM |
And the fact that she was able to do that ^ suggests she has potential to pull off a bigger upset at a higher level. I’m honestly hoping she moderates her positions, because she has the kind of charisma that Democratic candidates typically need to win.
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 21, 2021 1:27 PM |
AOC is the only one in Congress with balls - and brains.
I love the way she grilled Mark Zuckerberg. He squirmed like a lab specimen pinned to the board.
Watch.

She is pretty, is an immigrant success story, and she always seems invested in what she is talking about which is good on camera. And she's funded by an important PAC.
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 21, 2021 1:55 PM |
I agree with the pretty part. But AOC is dumb as a rock. Who else would come up with her stupid ideas?

Why is AOC considered so important in her own mind?
There - fixed it for you.
Even a thread that seemingly (but doesn't) criticizes her is actually a threat to assert that her ridiculous positions have merit and that she's somehow an important part of a discussion. Her historical importance will be to have pushed ideas that caused more centrist leaning people to head for the exits.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 21, 2021 2:07 PM |
She thinks she is important. She is a horrid millennial cunt in a shoo-in district who likes the sound of her own bullshit.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 21, 2021 2:07 PM |
R26...She barely gave him a chance to answer....not seeming to be interested in his answers. It looked to me like it was her "show"... and she took full advantage of being on camera, again. She is a good self promoter...I'll give her that, but my feelings about her are...she's ok..then to an annoyance. She really thinks she's all that.
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 21, 2021 2:11 PM |
As long as GQP ers are fixated with this brilliant Latina and continue to physically assault her at work, she will be in the news. That will be a long time.

[quote]a shoo-in district...
Well, she beat a 10-term DEMOCRATIC congressman who was not representing his district's interests; that's not exactly the definition of "shoo-in". In fact, Crowley (the guy she beat) was Democratic Caucus Chair, making that "shoo-in" district not so... shoo.
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 21, 2021 2:38 PM |
Something new. Someone who isn't just there to serve the rich. It's always a bit of a surprise when that happens, and people take notice.

| by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 21, 2021 3:22 PM |
When someone like AOC can gt under the skin of MAGAts the way she does, she's doing something right. I wish we had twelve more like her in congress.
| by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 21, 2021 3:42 PM |
Because the Republicans are terrified of her. As are the moderate Democrats.
AOC represents what this country should be about, and yet even most Democrats are against her because most Democrats are centrist cowards. Centrist policies have managed to keep this country as the shit show that it is. Fail fail fail. Does anyone think Joe Biden has been a great president so far? The best thing about him is that he is better than Trump. Quite a low bar, I'd say. The middle class continues to suffer under both Republican and Democrat administrations. Elected officials like AOC, and Bernie, and Elizabeth Warren and several others represent new, more progressive ideas. And people reject them because most people are fucking robots who are afraid of change.
AOC is fucking awesome.
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 21, 2021 3:49 PM |
The sleazeball Republicans hate her because they want to fuck her while she wouldn't spit on them if they were on fire. It's the same thing you see play out with any smart women. Tucker et al probably have their dominatrixes wear AOC masks while cry in their diapers over her.
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 21, 2021 4:00 PM |
She has charisma which is why she has been recruited and groomed by the democratic socialists party.
| by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 21, 2021 4:04 PM |
She’s outspoken and photogenic. And she represents the fringe element of the Democratic Party that is very into symbolism and terminology (although she’s not *just* about that and has principles about helping working class people that really should be the party’s primary goal).
She’s also the poster girl of Republican claims about what’s wrong with the Democratic Party, even though her agenda is strictly fringe.
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 21, 2021 4:21 PM |
[quote]AOC represents what this country should be about, and yet even most Democrats are against her because most Democrats are centrist cowards.
With her Q rating, AOC is the 7th most popular Democrat behind Warren, Harris, Biden, Sanders, Carter and Obama.
She has millennials and Gen-Z on lock.
She was so great at grilling Zuckerberg because, unlike the other people up there, she grew up with Facebook. She didn't have to do much research. It's always strange to me when politicians start questioning tech billionaires and they obviously have no clue what they're asking.
The voting block that will keep AOC in office is aging as she is. She's not going anywhere. If she stays in politics, she will be even more powerful going forward because she "gets it."
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 21, 2021 4:49 PM |

Yeah, sad but true, octogenarian senators have no business talking about the internet, much less regulating it. It's one thing they just haven't a damn clue about, and it's always an embarrassing spectacle when they try to pretend they do. Just bad all around.

| by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 21, 2021 5:09 PM |
I doubt any of the Squad and a number of other progressives ran campaigns much different than hers, either in terms of grassroots or platform. Something else is at play. She gets the most attention of any progressive.

| by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 21, 2021 5:35 PM |
[quote] It's mostly because she's a lightening rod for angry, uninformed right-wing jerk-offs.
And, her GOP nemesis Marjorie Tyler Green(MTG) has basically copied her. She has become her mirror image. She only gets attention because she is "a lightening rod for angry, uninformed left-wing jerk offs." This isn't comparing them as people or judging their policy proposals. Each are just one congressperson out of many and are on the fringes of their caucus. But, each of them manages to command much more attention from the press than their colleagues, even though neither have accomplished anything. Basically, each seem tailor made to piss off the other side. AOC is a young woke female Hispanic socialist with a tendency to emotionally lecture people. MTG is an older blonde white Southern female right wing populist. I think both of them derive their power, not from support from their side but from the hate they receive from across the aisle.
| by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 21, 2021 5:38 PM |
Politicians like WOC, MTG, Omar, Boebert etc say outrageous things because it helps with their fund raising. You'd be amazed at how much money politicians rake in based solely on the stupid shit they say and do.
We really need a new system of funding politics. If it's not money from special interest, it grassroots money based on outrage... neither is healthy for the long-term prospects of this country.
| by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 21, 2021 6:08 PM |
Most of us are too old and jaded to no longer get the sincere passion of the young. How did we forget our own? They believe in change and are not afraid of it. They have not been beaten down by life yet.
MTG is a troll trying to discredit AOC by copying her tactics, hoping to make her look ridiculous. But its just antics, playing to jeering, sneering people like herself. She's simply the cynical, corrupt antithesis because she doesn't have any intellect.
AOC is the real thing. She's fighting for people like MTG, who's too stupid to understand that.
| by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 21, 2021 6:31 PM |
What exactly does AOC say that is so outrageous, really? MTG goes on about Jewish space lasers, Lauren Boebert is a total gun nut and is pretty much training her kids to be gun nuts who will probably shoot up a school some day. All the wingnuts promote the big lie that Trump double plus secret won the government and had every reason to steal it by force anyway.
What exactly does AOC say that is so crazy and outrageous?

I was hopeful about AOC, but she's gotten way to predictable. Getting way too snowflakey over the "insurrection" was one thing. Then she had that stupid dress at the Met Gala. Then she cried on the floor of the house for a vote. It's all disappointing, because she was supposed to represent the interests of working class Americans, especially from her neighborhood with a high population of immigrants and POC. Instead she seems to be more concerned about herself, and her feelings, and her own self promotion. She's starting to run on fumes of good will from her sweetheart days. Now is the time for her to show some substance and toughness.
