Geese are grazing birds that eat a variety of different items. They eat roots, shoots, stems, seeds, and leaves of grass and grain, bulbs, and berries. They also eat insects and Canada Geese can submerge their heads in water to graze on aquatic plants.
What can I feed my backyard geese?
Geese generally prefer clovers, bluegrass, orchard grass, timothy, and bromegrass over alfalfa and tougher grasses. You can also feed geese healthy greens and some green scraps, but avoid known poisonous greens (see “Things that are toxic to geese”, below).
Can you feed wild geese?
Don’t feed them. Birds normally stay away from humans, but feeding them can make them lose their fear of us. While it’s really only geese who attack, says Kress, not feeding waterbirds helps keep proper distance. Supplementing birds’ diets can alter their behaviour in other ways, too.
