Troop Beverly Hills (19989)

This is one of those movies where people can and do read different things into it. Some see it as a feminist movie - while others think it's very pro-rich, materialistic or anti-career woman.

Shelly Long's character is somewhat complex and realistic (probably moreso now, because LA is full of these rich, materialistic women who are also Democrats with progressive social views. You can probably say that about every big coastal city in America right now. Maybe Austin, TX as well.

Loved this film! Heaps of fun and very gay.

I love how Shelley’s character has a tailor custom-make her troop leader outfits to look more fashionable.

They were fabulous R3. I must watch this again. Haven't seen it for 15 or so years.

I caught this a few Sundays ago, and it was still hilarious and very positive. Seeing Jenny Lewis, Carla Gugino, Kellie Martin and Tori Spelling when they were so young was a hoot.

I just see it as a campy comedy — which is what it is.

For some reason I thought Golde Hawn was in this.

Goldie was busy playing a rich bitch in Overboard.

But it’s fun, R13. For a lot us this movie was part of our childhood.

I say this all the time. Most people have no idea where it’s from. I’m sad for them. This movie is great.

However, as a Kmart shopper as a kid, I didn’t like the Kmart slander. Blue light special forever!

Shelley Long was a kind of dollar store version of Goldie Hawn for a few years.

This movie comes up regularly on Pluto TV.

The opening John K animated credits and accompanying Beach Boys track “Make It Big” still make me smile.

Love this movie. I hate that Shelley Long got lumped in with David Caruso as a TV star who jumped to film. The difference was Long had fulfilled her contract for Cheers and had been on the show for five seasons. Caruso bailed after the first season. Different scenarios.

She deserved a better film career, although I still love Outrageous Fortune, The Money Pit, Hello Again and, of course, Troop Beverly Hills. It's a lot of fun, and a classic.

I didn’t know that r34. I always assumed she bailed early like Caruso. There’s nothing wrong with leaving after five years if you want to move on and try something new.

Loved her in The Money Pit.

While I prefer the Diane years, the Sam and Diane story had run its course. I don't think it would have worked with them as a married couple, and it would have been hard to break them up and find yet another reason why Diane would stay at the bar. I can see why Long was ready to leave.

It did also shake up the format of the show a bit and allowed it to have a new life for a few years (although it probably went a year or two too long).

I think she gets batched with the David Carusos and Claire Danes' because some of her castmates weren't exactly supportive of her decision.

I came home from school one day and heard my father laughing like I'd never heard him laugh before. I walk into the living room and it's the scene where she's in bed with all the Evian/naivE bottles all around her. He's going on about how it's not vodka, but water bottles and almost pissing himself laughing and saying how nuts she is. My dad was such a tough guy but this scene for some reason made him giggle like a 12-year-old girl.

To me, it's a perfect example of why I love '80s movies like the Goonies, Ruthless People, etc. it's FUN. Movies today just look like they are made by committees. Even back in the '80s, yes, they were made to make $$ but the people behind them still wanted to entertain viewers. And the cast looks like they're having fun so it makes it a fun viewing experience.

R34, has she ever had a serious role? I’m thinking about everything she’s ever done, and it’s all comedies. I’m sure those choices limited her from having a better film career.

r42 You're right. Most of her roles were comedic. She did get some good reviews for Dr. T. and the Women although it was more of a comedy. She also did that TV movie where she played a woman with multiple personalities and got some good notices.

The dynamic is reminiscent of Goldie Hawn and Eileen Brennan in Private Benjamin. Hilarious.

R42 Irreconcilable Differences was the type of dramedy people do sometimes get Oscar noms for if the movie had been more successful. That was undoubtedly her best shot at anything sort of A list.

I love ID and thought Long, Barrymore and O'Neil were all wonderful. Barrymore's honestly most mature performance (ironically) until Confessions of A Dangerous Mind.

Shelley had the stuff to have such a better career. Movies I think she would have been really good at:

The Meryl part in She-Devil

The Kathleen Turner part in War of the Roses

Either lead in Death Becomes Her

I thought it was stupid fun.
