Thought this was interesting.
I didn't know that Barry Diller was the one who gave the greenlight to the movie!
Cliff Robertson turned down a role in the movie, saying he'd rather play Hitler!

Good docu. Hilarious censors thought blowing on a daffodil could be interpreted as oral sex!

R2, that part made me laugh out loud.

If that's true Robertson sounds like a homophobic cunt. To think he won an undeserved Oscar for crapfest "Charly" over Peter O'Toole in "The Lion In Winter" and Alan Bates in "The Fixer"!

No one even watches Charly anymore

I watched this movie last week. It looks like it's supposed to be: an early 70s TV movie. The production is very basic and the script needed some polishment, not to mention extra time. Having said that, I think it accomplishes its role. It's well cast (Martin Sheen looks more comfortable here than in Grace & Frankie), and the plot is realistic in a positive way. It certainly set the template for dozens of gay movies that would be released in later years.
I hope it gets a home video/streaming re-release someday.

R7, where did you see the movie? Is it streaming somewhere?

r2 A daffodil was put to good, and comic, use in the British film "Carry On, Nurse."
I can never look at Wilfrid Hyde-White without thinking of that scene. What a trouper.

R8 I found it on Ok.ru. Not a high quality print, but it's watchable.

The young Martin Sheen was a beautiful creature..

Hal Holbrook looks like he could've played Quentin Crisp. LOL.

I still stand by Cliff Robertson. He was never better than in Charly and Autumn Leaves.

Mark Twain was into Latino twinks! Who knew?

Why is Mark Twain in this?

I have a hard time watching films with gay characters in the '70s, knowing what was about to befall them in a few years.

Scott Jacoby's best part until he got the coveted role of Michael Zbornak.

Jacoby's best part was Bad Ronald.

Bad Ronald is SO overrated...by kids of the 70s.

Don't ask John Lithgow about Cliff Robertson.
