Taunt (Japanese: ちょうはつ Taunt) is a non-damaging Dark-type move introduced in Generation III.

It is:

Effect

Taunt makes the afflicted Pokémon unable to use status moves. The effect wears off if the subject is switched out. Unlike most status moves, Taunt will affect a target with a substitute.

If a Pokémon that only knows status moves is taunted, or is taunted after using a status move and holding a Choice item, then it will be forced to use Struggle.

On the turn that Taunt is used, if the Pokémon using Taunt goes before the target and the target selected a status move that turn, the target's move will fail.

Generation III

The duration of Taunt is two turns.

Taunt cannot be copied by Mirror Move.

Taunt can be used as the first move of a Pokémon Contest combination, causing Counter, Detect, and Mirror Coat to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn.

Generation IV

The duration of Taunt is now between three and five turns.

Taunt can now be copied by Mirror Move.

Generation V

The duration of Taunt is now three turns if the user acts before the target, or four turns if the target acted before the user.

Taunt can now be reflected with Magic Coat and no longer affects Me First.

Generation VI onwards

Pokémon with Oblivious or under the effect of Aroma Veil cannot become taunted.

Taunt can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing certain moves (Counter, Destiny Bond, Grudge, King's Shield, Metal Burst, Mirror Coat, and Spite) to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

Taunt will not prevent the target from using a status Z-Move, but will prevent a Dynamax target from using Max Guard.

If powered up by a Darkinium Z into Z-Taunt, the user's Attack rises one stage.

Other effects

Clobbopus that know this move will evolve into Grapploct when leveled up.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

Taunt targets the enemy in front and inflicts the Taunted status condition. A Taunted Pokémon cannot use status moves. Prior to Gates to Infinity they also could not use Seeds or Wonder Orbs. From Explorers of Time and Darkness, the move can be reflected with Magic Coat.

While the list of moves affected follows the core series, certain attacking moves (listed below) are classified as status moves in these games. Also, despite Assist, Fling, Metronome, Nature Power, and Rock Smash* being classified as status moves, these moves were not affected by Taunt in the earlier series. These were fixed in later games. Moves that are marked with ✓ cannot be used while Taunted.
