I wonder if Martin's wife will be at the show.
| by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 11, 2022 1:29 AM |
Ten years ago, Short hosted SNL right after the Sandy Hook massacre. It was surreal.
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 11, 2022 1:43 AM |
They should do a sketch where Steve and Martin play an old married gay couple.

Martin Short acts like an idiot and he still makes me laugh, this Minky skit

They really need to get some better talent on the show musically and cast wise.

When Sarah Sherman played the little girl visiting Steve Martin's Santa I realized she reminds me of Gilda Radner.

Everyone, including the musical guest, has been YELLING at the top of their lungs the whole show. Are they trying to swap being funny for being extra LOUD?
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 11, 2022 6:06 AM |
I'm remembering Steve Martin from when he was on with the original cast.
It's rough seeing him as an old man with lower energy and mobility.
But what can you do?
| by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 11, 2022 6:29 AM |
Martin Short is only 5 years younger yet he seems 20 years younger.
Loved the monologue, and also enjoyed the FoB and writers sketch. The rest sucked - which just goes to show you how bad the writing is now.

This one was the best in years!
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 11, 2022 1:26 PM |
I have not been watching consistently the past few years - but thought it was one of the better episodes I had seen for a while. I think part of it was due to the hosts seeming like they were having fun. I might have laughed a little too hard during the Christmas Carol sketch when Tiny Tim fell into the sewer. I might have to finally watch the Murder in the Building series.
I did not catch her second song, and not sure if I liked the first song, but Belinda still has a pretty solid voice. Also, it seemed like she was trying to do something different and not just trying to replicate her 1980's Go Go's, early solo career style.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 11, 2022 2:25 PM |
^^^yes, R46!
And she looks great - maybe even younger than when she appeared on To Tell the Truth
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 11, 2022 2:37 PM |
It was refreshing to see Sarah Sherman in a skit where she wasn't yelling her freaking head off for a change.
And her dad is hot.
| by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 11, 2022 5:41 PM |
Best line on the show last night was when Steve Martin was eulogizing Martin Short: "His last words were 'Tesla autopilot engage.'"
I hope that pissed off Elon fucking Musk to no end.
| by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 11, 2022 5:45 PM |
Is anyone going to tell R46 that the musical guest was Brandi Carlile and NOT senior citizen Belinda Carlisle from the group that normalized the errant apostrophe.
| by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 11, 2022 6:08 PM |
I appreciated Martin Short doing his Ed Grimly / Jackie Rogers Jr dance ( (though he didn’t call it that)
| by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 11, 2022 6:25 PM |
So, Brandi doesn’t have the beat?
| by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 11, 2022 6:58 PM |
Didn’t Carlisle sounds a lot like Joni Mitchell in that second song? Was it an hommage or a rip off?

Cecily Strong face looks a little different. I hardly recognized her.
| by Anonymous | reply 56 | December 11, 2022 8:24 PM |
I was (lamely) joking, but I do kind of think Brandi looked a bit like Belinda at certain parts of her life.
| by Anonymous | reply 57 | December 11, 2022 8:28 PM |
Brandi has such an incredible voice. Though I did feel bad it totally cracked.
Martin Short, though he annoys me plenty, is simply a talented sketch comedy performer.

[quote]Martin Short, though he annoys me plenty, is simply a talented sketch comedy performer.
Yes, when he was a regular on SCTV and SNL and I saw him weekly, he could annoy me, but was thinking last night that he was a natural at this and really seemed in his element.
| by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 11, 2022 9:39 PM |
I kept wondering why Martin Short wasn't the immediate replacement for Nathan Lane when he left The Producers? All that energy, zaniness, and I'm-in-on-the joke delivery would have been terrific for Max.
Max: The two cardinal rules of producing are one: Never put your own money in the show.
Leo: And two?
Max: NEVER PUT YOUR MONEY IN THE SHOW!!!
| by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 11, 2022 9:55 PM |
R60 Probably because Martin Short isn't a trained Broadway singer/dancer. He's got the energy and he tries his best, but he's not a stage actor and he knows it.
Also, sketch comedians like him do their best work when they have the freedom to do what comes next. They keep it loose, and chafe under a settled script and eight shows a week of the same shit.
| by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 11, 2022 9:58 PM |
I’m always surprised whenever I go to look at Short’s filmography and - aside from Father of the Bride and (I guess) Three Amigos - is one craptastik flop after another. I adore him and yet it’s not like I can ever go say - I’m in the mood to really laugh let’s watch that Martin Short movie.
| by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 11, 2022 10:32 PM |
Sarah Sherman's dad needs to be on the show more.

"Three Amigos" was popular, I guess, but it was pretty crappy.

Martin Short is such a specialized performer, he's only right for certain roles. But when he's great, he's great.

R65 yeah I agree - but it was “successful.” Especially compared to other movies he’s starred in. He’s hard to cast, I guess?
He’s so great though and he’s still 100 percent got it. I adore him and it was probably the one time I was genuinely disappointed to read not nice stories about a celebrity (on here, of course).

R71 Yes. At the end of the skit, it said the guy really was her dad.

R72, sure, but that doesn't mean it was true.
Look at the very last words on the screen from this old SNL pre-tape. Do you think it was true?

Wasn't her character's name in that skit Charlotte or something like that? If they meant it was supposed to be the character's father, wouldn't they have said "Charlotte's Real Dad" instead of "Sara Sherman's Real Dad"? Just my attempt at logic.

"Clifford," the movie in which Short plays a 10-year-old, sounded excruciating. I didn't see it because nobody offered to pay me $10,000 if I did.

I have not seen the move, but I am guessing that Charles Grodin and was the perfect partner for Short's annoying child and his reactions created a lot of the laughter and kept the movie from being unbearable.

Marty Short is a bit too high-energy to have his own talk show, but he's a great guest on other people's.
I'm surprised no one here has mentioned Jiminy Glick, his obese and effeminate Hollywood journalist who bungles basic facts and shovels down piles of donuts and jelly beans. He's basically Data Lounge brought to human form.
| by Anonymous | reply 92 | December 14, 2022 2:52 PM |
Those two are such a contrast with each other. Steve Martin has always been sexy. He looked so good in 3Amigos. It’s cool to see Martin Short healthy and energetic when he’s not a spring chicken . He’s very stream of consciousness.
| by Anonymous | reply 93 | December 14, 2022 3:06 PM |
R93 Steve Martin is a singular talent, but he's also just a bit of an asshole. Even the people who love him also hate him a little bit. He's pretentious about art, music, and the nature of comedy, and not as artful in making his dry insults comedic rather than just insulting.
Martin Short and Jean Smart once did an "actors on actors" thing where they agreed that Steve Martin was the biggest dick each of them ever worked with.
