The problem with the film is that it is not about depression but about BPD. Everything in Lizzie screams borderline personality.

R6 Either way, it’s a stark, unsentimental—and underrated—examination of the reverberating impact of psychopathologies, be they mood or behavioral disorders. Ricci’s portrayal of Wurtzel’s ennui, mania, and despair has a pitiful, pathetic quality to it that’s painfully truthful, and Lange matches her. Her performance brims with pathos and is peppered with a soupçon of mania, implying that she may have unintentionally modeled for “Lizzie” some of the characteristics she and her daughter now grapple with and rail against.
