I found Schneider repulsive as well UNTIL the episode where Barbara discovered he was banging a peer of hers by walking in on Pat shirtless. That sexualized the actor for me big time. The show did the same thing to me with Howard Hesseman, who I always admired for playing Bob Hartley’s gay patient on “The Bob Newhart Show”.

It was no surprise Mackenzie Phillips was making more per episode than Bonnie Franklin by the start of the 1980s. people forget what a huge sex symbol she was back then.

Mackenzie embodied the female sexual ideal. Every Tuesday night a million teenage boys would get hard watching her on the credits do her famous "Skinny White Girl Jive Stepping" (as shown at r1), and would imagine her doing it just for their own private pleasure, like Salome before the eyes of Herod. They would fantasize about her seductively shrilling, "MA, YOU'RE DRIVING ME CRAZY!" in the privacy of their own bedrooms.

Is it any wonder her poster (see below) was such a huge national bestseller? Every college boy had it up in his dorm room over his bed. Like Max on the show, or her father in real life, they wanted Julie Cooper / Mackenzie Phillips, desperately.

In the early episodes, Julie got all the attention (prob due to Phillips coming from “American Graffiti”) but it was Barbara we really loved.

In the book mentioned by someone else upthread, director Alan Rafkin says:

Mackenzie Phillips was one of the brightest young actresses I have ever worked with. Yet she was also one of the most unfortunate ones. She not only had a rough family life growing up, she had less support in her life than any other human being I have ever come upon.

I have to disagree with the above poster who said that ODAAT was an entirely different show by the time the series ended. It was not funny and it was not funny at the end, and it was never funny in any of its nine seasons. Though, where originally the scripts appeared to be the product of a local community center feminist playwriting workshop, by the end they just seemed like the standard sitcom on life support dreck usually found in the early 1980s.

Sadly, allI remember about this show is Ann Romano's unholstered tits flipping around and pointing into my family rec room.

About the time Valerie Bertinelli discovered hot rollers and the luscious wavy locks grew in, R69. She soon became the IT girl of 70s sitcoms. And Mackenzie started appearing less often due to offscreen issues (I believe, I was pretty young when the show came on.)

I loved the early years, eventually outgrew it, don’t even remember how it ended.

On the plus side, and I didn't realize it during the original run, it was one of the first shows to depict an extended/blended family beyond the guest shot visiting aunt/uncle/cousin.

Yes, The Brady Bunch and The Lucy Show gave us simple versions of that, but all the ODAAT comings and goings (Shelley and Nanette, Glenn, the girls' husbands, Howard H.) presented it in a modern way.

I remember when the show first premiered, Norman Lear had said he developed the show with 'Mackenzie Phillips' (the breakout star from 'American Graffitti') as the star. The weekly stories were to focus on her, and her 'anguish' as the all-American high school teenager. 'Ann', Barbara' and 'Schneider' were supposed to be (more or less) supporting players around Phillip's character. Yet when he cast the show with Franklin as the mother (he wanted to work with her since he saw her in 'Applause' in 1970), he realized she was a bigger talent than just a supporting player - and the format of the show changed.

As for Michael Lembeck, I wish they had released that shirtless photo still of him in a 'poster' - every gay guy in America (and gay teen like myself) would've hung it in our rooms. Who needs Farrah in a red bathing suit ?
