Located at Plaza de la Armería, between the Royal Palace and La Almudena Cathedral, this scenic viewpoint has just reopened, offering wonderful vistas over Campo del Moro Gardens and Casa de Campo Park.
Right next to the Royal Collections Gallery, the observation deck can be accessed through any of the five gates in the ornate iron fence that surrounded the original enclosure of the palace grounds. Designed in 1899 by the palace’s chief architect, Enrique Repullés Segarra, the fence was removed when construction began on the museum in 2007.
The perimeter railings are 52 metres long, of which half are taken up by 5 double gates that offer ample access to the viewpoint. The rest of the fence is set atop the original Colmenar stone base which has been cleaned and restored. The sections of the iron railings that were in poor condition have also been either fixed or replaced, and any missing spikes have been reinstated, bringing the total height of the railings to around 5 metres.
The viewpoint is free to access from Monday to Sunday, 12 noon to 10pm.
