I rewatched the 2008 series Swingtown this week

Any fans? I enjoyed it as much this time as I did when it first aired. It’s still surprising that a show about swinging was aired on CBS.

I love all three of the women—Molly Parker, Miriam Shor, and Lana Parrilla, as well as Grant Show. I would have recast the two other male leads, but they didn’t ruin the show. And Michael Rady, who played Laurie’s athletic philosophy teacher/boyfriend, was perhaps the cutest guy on TV at the time.

Fantastic music, of course. The budget for music rights must have been enormous.

I watched it at the time and loved it. The main three women were terrific (Miriam Shor's evolution was surprising) and Michael Rady was adorable (WHET?).

It was developed for Showtime but the new CBS president grabbed it, unfortunately. It should have been on cable, where there could have been nudity and it would've had a nice long run.

We've discussed it on some other random threads; there are several other fans on DL. In terms of shows that were canceled too soon, this is in my top 5.

It’s a crime that Miriam Shor is not in more projects. She’s fantastic.

I wish it had run on cable, where it would have certainly gotten a season #2 just on cache. The show was so surprising and good, especially Miriam Shor.

For as great as Molly Parker and Lana Parilla were, Miriam Shor was the breakout acting champion of that show. That was the least written role in episode 1, and she was the star by the end.

I was sad when it was cancelled. So many hot guys.

I also loved the production design. They nailed the period with very few to no anachronisms I could spot.

It is so hard for movies and TV shows to get the '70s precisely right, without going too cartoonish or too modern.

Yes, loved it and have mentioned it on a few threads here and I agree with everything stated. I think this might have been the last traditional TV network show that I actually got excited about anticipating it being on each week. If I recall it was on Friday nights, unfortunately always a death spot for most shows. But on Wednesdays I was already happy about it being on soon. Pouring over the set design each week was a real treat and having the internet to look things up and find them was cool too. And of course the music. What a missed opportunity for a premium cable network, or today a streaming one.

I remember now, I most recently mentioned this in the Mrs. America thread, finding Sarah Paulson’s character, especially when she goes done the rabbit hole at the convention, a kindred soul to this show. I said how I wished they would spin that character off, the only primary one not based on an actual person, and build a similar show like Swingtown around her.

R2 You are aware of her on the series Younger right? She is quite a treat and a highlight of the show and that’s saying a lot next to Sutton Foster. I hope that set is as much fun and they enjoy working to together as it seems to be on the show.

R9, I have the DVD set! It includes two short docs about the making of the series.

R11 Thanks, was looking where it might be streaming and something called Daily Motion (youtube lite?) has thirteen episodes on it. There’s also this three minute video with the show runner talking about it. He discusses about it being developed for HBO and they ejected it because there were to many similar shows and CBS courted them for it against their better judgement. The first year was set in ‘76 and he says how they really want four years to get to 1980 and the big cultural scene “swing” of Regan entering office. If only that had been the case.

IIRC, reviews at the time compared it unfavorably to Mad Men, which was the period piece that had just debuted and was rocking everyone's world.

I loved Mad Men, but I also loved this show. It was about self-discovery and liberation, and there was a lightness to it. There was conflict and drama, but nobody was terminally oppressed or repressed. It was sexy and hopeful. Something about it really hit the spot that summer.

I loved Lana Parrilla’s character so much.

Lana Parrilla really did a great job with that character, gave the sexy vixen a lot of warmth and depth.

Miriam was made to look frumpy much of the time, befitting her character, and I loved the few times she glammed up.

The only one that bugged me was the buck tooth daughter

I remember there was a pretty large DL thread on Swingtown during its original airing, and the daughter's ... look was much discussed.

The less said now, the better.

Miriam Shor was wonderful in the also-cancelled -too-soon "GCB."
