Was circumcision the norm in 1960s Canada? I'm wondering about Cameron Bancroft, who was born in 1967. I have a friend who was not circumcised, who was born in Montreal in 1965. His family was French, which "Bancroft" does not sound like.

Back in the 1960s', yes, circumcision was the norm in Canada, except for Catholics, including Catholic French Canadians.

Just to add, there are some French Canadians with Irish or Anglo surnames. Some orphaned Irish kids in the 1850s/60s adopted by French Canadian families were allowed to retain their Irish surnames.

And there was English/French intermarriage all through the years.

So yeah, there are some French Canadians with non-French last names. Bancroft doesn't sound like one, though.

Circ back then was covered by the gov't, but was not mandatory, as it seems to be in USA! USA! USA!

The rate about 60% cut vs. 40% uncut. The highest rate was and is in Alberta, or as we call it--America light.

The further east you went, the lower the rate, to about 50/50 in Ontario, 80/20 in Quebec, and NB and less than 1% in Newfoundland.

Oddly enough, it was close to 100% in PEI, which is still the fact today. Not sure why PEI is so cut happy, but they have always had close ties to America, and wherever you have a high American influence, you have a high circ rate. South Korea and Australia being good examples of that.

It's depressing how little imagery there is on the net of Henry Czerny in his prime. Surely one of the most handsome of Canadian actors.
