The maker of Eskimo Pies will change the 99-year-old brand name of the ice cream treat, the company said Friday — becoming the latest organization to overhaul the marketing of a product with a racially tinged moniker in recent weeks.

In a related move, Good Humor-Breyers will kill its popular "Klondike" bars because of its lesbian-tinged moniker.

In Canada and Greenland, the term "Eskimo" is predominantly seen as pejorative and has been widely replaced by the term "Inuit" or terms specific to a particular group or community. This has resulted in a trend whereby some Canadians and Americans believe that they should not use the word "Eskimo" and use the Canadian word "Inuit" instead, even for Yupik people. Some people still believe that Eskimo translates to "eater of raw meat" which may be seen as a violent and perhaps barbaric descriptor as used by racist colonizers.

Inuit or Eskimo: Which name to use?

Linguists now believe that "Eskimo" is derived from an Ojibwa word meaning "to net snowshoes." However, the people of Canada and Greenland prefer other names. "Inuit," meaning "people," is used in most of Canada, and the language is called "Inuktitut" in eastern Canada although other local designations are used also. The Inuit people of Greenland refer to themselves as "Greenlanders" or "Kalaallit" in their language, which they call "Greenlandic" or "Kalaallisut."

Most Alaskans continue to accept the name "Eskimo," particularly because "Inuit" refers only to the Inupiat of northern Alaska, the Inuit of Canada, and the Kalaallit of Greenland, and it is not a word in the Yupik languages of Alaska and Siberia.

Haagen Dazs ice cream bars are much better because the ice cream is better. Esquimaux Pies are made with cheap, thin ice cream, little better than ice milk. HD bars are made with rich, silky HD ice cream.

R10 I'm outraged it's taken this long!

by Anonymousreply 30June 20, 2020 1:30 AM

EVERYTHING must be revisited NOW.

Case in point: Krazy Glue.

An insult to everyone on a spectrum, or near one. And the damage to the bipolar community....unspeakable.

by Anonymousreply 31June 20, 2020 1:33 AM

Now what can we rub, like the Inuits?

by Anonymousreply 33June 20, 2020 1:36 AM

I insist that author Gay Talese change his first name or be cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 35June 20, 2020 2:25 AM

I'm concerned what my grocer will think of me. If I buy white beans, will he think me a racist? If I buy black beans, does he think it's lip service and that they'll just collect dust on the shelf or be donated to the poor at Thanksgiving? I've been a Land O Lakes butter consumer since birth. I'm just supposed to just drop it and buy Trader Joe's butter instead? What if Joe turns out to be a traitor? This leaves me all so confused and angst-ridden. Shopping for groceries IS hell right now.

racism (definition): prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.

An Eskimo Pie is an ice cream. Ice cream is cold. Eskimos live in northern regions. Where it's cold.

Not a damn thing derogatory about it.

by Anonymousreply 41June 20, 2020 4:46 AM

Is "Eskimo" a racial slur?

by Anonymousreply 52June 20, 2020 5:30 AM

In the book, Cheaper By the Dozen - which is quite charming - the mother indicates her offense at rudeness or a distasteful subject by wrinkling her nose and saying “That’s Eskimo.”

I still use it.

by Anonymousreply 67June 21, 2020 1:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 75October 12, 2020 10:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 77October 12, 2020 11:39 PM
