Entertainment Tonight

I started to watch this show during the summers in the 80s when it was rebroadcast the following morning. It was the only source of entertainment news back then. And they would always be breaking stories and have news before anyone else. Now with thousands of websites, it's become irrelevant. I don't even hear about it still being on anymore. But I really did use to look forward to watching the show, and I loved Mary Hart. How she stayed put, and her male co-hosts were on a revolving seat out the door.

I remember when John Tesh took over, and it was like when Deborah Norville and Conan O'Brien came onto the scene. He seems so oafish, and out of place. But after a while he turned out to be a decent guy, and held his own with the Grande Dame Ms. Hart.

I started to lose interest when Leeza Gibbons came on and she appeared so fake with her mask of makeup. But most of the copycat shows that followed like A Current Affair, Extra, Inside Edition and Access Hollywood had host very similar to her look and style.

Mary Hart was such a babe at the time she even had Sylvester Stallone as a booty call on speed dial.

I always liked their Dynasty-esque soaring, orchestral theme song. It created an aura of glamour and suspense.

After Mary Hart's legs were insured for a million dollars each, she always kept them in the same proper position, in the best possible angle.. Like Angelina displaying hers at the Oscars, it seemed forced.

I used to love this show when I was a young teen in the mid 90's but it became so trashy over time. I remember when they used to do set visits to upcoming movies and debut trailers, now it's just like a TV version of National Enquirer. Same thing happened to E! News, so I guess that's what people want now.

It seems to trashy Kardashian stories all the time now.

It wasn't the norm at the time for a female host to always get the lead story. The male host would begin the intro, with "I'm Rob Weller" or "I'm John Tesh... " And then the standard follow-up ",,,and I'm Mary Hart!" with the breaking story.

You're right r9, there was something grand and sophisticated about it. Back then entertainment shows were actually well produced and not trashy. There was a certain prestige. Leonard Maltin would talk with stars from the Golden Age.

Everything has become TMZ type of programming. But even Entertainment Weekly started going down that route long ago. I can't remember when. Maybe the O.J. Simpson trial?

But when they started doing those week-long "confrontations" like Amy Fisher confronting the Buttafuocos it became trash. And then they had the Insider which really wasn't any different.

Like OP, we used to watch ET every single night back when it premiered in the fall of 1981. It was appointment television after the local and national news. That went on for several years.

Now, I can say I literally have not watched it in over 25 years (nor even think about the fact it's still on the air).

On the weekends ET would have great hour long programs like Mary Beth McDonough talking to a very frail Ellen Corby, who admitted her favorite kid on the show was Jon Walmsley. You would never see anything like that on there today.

I had no idea Nancy O'Dell was now on Entertainment Tonight.

I met Leeza Gibbons 10-15 years ago in passing at an event I was working at the Beverly Hills Hotel. She was flawless looking in person. We chatted a little. Years later I had a little career meltdown and was searching for direction and emailed all these random people I had met superficially, including her. She and a writer from ER sent me long, straighforward but encouraging responses. So I have a high opinion of Leeza.

I'm watching Entertainment Tonight right now, and it has gotten fucking weird. Dramatic piano playing to emphasize something "serious". None of the anthemic, orchestral soaring theme we all knew and loved back in the 80s and 90s.

Without Mary Hart, the show is nothing.

I hated that they’d have a headline in the beginning that they’d leave you hanging for the whole show with the: “Coming up...” and “Stay tuned for...” and then “Coming up next...”

I loved it too especially the Leonard Maltin segments because I was obsessed with the golden age of Hollywood. CNN also had their own show (Showbiz Today) with Bella Shaw, Laurin Sydney, and Bill Tush. I also liked CNN's Style With Elsa Klensch. I miss the old CNN.

ET always seemed to try and find the fakest and least capable of sincerity when it came to their female hosts.
