Or is it just the fem ones? My friend jokingly said the other day that I was walking 'gay speed'. I didn't know what she meant. But it seems it might be a thing?
| by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 30, 2023 1:30 PM |
No. Its not a gay thing, its a crackhead thing.
| by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 5, 2022 5:49 PM |
OP, since you were caught doing it, it must be just "the fem ones."
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 5, 2022 5:51 PM |
She meant you are a femme OP
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 5, 2022 5:52 PM |
Yes it is a gay thing. Or at least an anxious thing.
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 5, 2022 6:05 PM |
OP "I didn't know what she meant."
Surely you asked her? Or you waited to come here and ask what we think?
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 5, 2022 6:13 PM |
I did laugh at the sassy wiggle the eldergay on White Lotus displayed.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 5, 2022 6:35 PM |
I’ve noticed anxiety riddled gays walk abnormally fast in public. Probably to avoid being beaten or stoned.
| by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 5, 2022 6:43 PM |
I mean the whole "gays walk fast" is a widespread joke online, surprised you haven't heard of it OP.
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 5, 2022 6:44 PM |
Besides the "Move, I'm gay" walk, there's also a distinctive, speedy physician walk. Probably no one moves faster than a gay doctor. They're like the wind.
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 5, 2022 6:51 PM |
I have given some occasional thought to this over the years and I do think there is something to this. I've never seen other guys walk as fast as I do, as if they're holding back. I think a sashaying element comes into play at a certain speed that can make men come across homosexually, which is why they tend to avoid it.
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 5, 2022 7:34 PM |
I do walk fast. I'm in and out of the grocery store in 15 minutes at most. But I don't swish. I was very careful to teach my body to walk butch much like avoiding gayvoice.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 5, 2022 7:45 PM |
I think most men don’t walk fast because it’s associated with women and effeminate men. Walking fast connotes being afraid, frantic, or hurried. Men are supposed to be in command, secure, too cool too rush. In urban neighborhoods, men especially walk with cavalier swag to communicate they are Alphas who rule the sidewalk. They are too cool and dominant to care about time nor others.

I have noticed recently that straight guys have figured out a shortcut in the form of electric scooters, which allow them to reach their destination quickly, but without exuding the cocksucking vibe. Rollerblades had a similar function a couple of decades ago, before the homosexuals claimed them as their own.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 27, 2023 5:12 AM |
Rollerblading isn’t very masculine
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 27, 2023 5:22 AM |
It's never crossed my mind that walking fast is effeminate? Maybe it's different outside NYC, but I have shit to do and walking at speed, up escalators (even those Hudson Yards/2nd Ave ones), and in the street to bypass some 4-abreast fraus with their dogs and strollers is a matter of efficiency for me.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 27, 2023 5:23 AM |
NYC is very different than The rest of America
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 27, 2023 5:24 AM |
GQ: Confidence coach Lisa Phillips says that a fear of homophobia in strangers could make gay men walk quickly. “If gay men feel self-conscious or fear attack, they could walk quickly to get away from perceived risks in order to feel safe again,” she explains. “They might also fear being judged or stared at, so want to move away from the ‘perceived risk’ as quickly as possible.”

I'm getting really tired of these constant uninformed questions about what gay men supposedly do and don't do. Are you straight op?
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 27, 2023 5:25 AM |
Almost everyone I've ever heard perpetuate this stereotype has been a gay male.
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 27, 2023 2:52 PM |
Or maybe we're just the ones brave enough to talk about it. And even then only amongst ourselves.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 27, 2023 3:10 PM |
I think it’s the type of thing that people in the group notice more acutely than those outside
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 27, 2023 3:35 PM |
Yes we all do. We’re the fastest runners in the world. All the Olympian runners are gay
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 27, 2023 3:37 PM |
Both my partner and my best friend from college are classic gay fast walkers. I think it must have some sort of psychological basis.
I feel like I was on the brisk side of normal and, especially in busy areas, walking next to them can be almost comical. It feels like we are in a “don’t look now, but we’re being followed! Just walk fast! Faster! Okay RUN!” chase scenes in a movie.
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 27, 2023 3:39 PM |
Walk fast, eat slow. Same as my Dad. It's not a gay thing.
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 27, 2023 3:40 PM |
Or maybe, just maybe, your daddy has something to tell you that he's been keeping to himself all these years.
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 27, 2023 3:43 PM |
Walking quickly is a sign of longevity. People who walk slowly are generally of poor health or lazy.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 27, 2023 4:51 PM |
I walk really fast and I think it comes off like I'm autistic and a scaredy cat

The Best Little Boy in the World walks fast because he has many important meetings and appointments to keep!
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 27, 2023 5:25 PM |
I walk twice as fast as my gay cousin. It's not a gay thing, that's just silly.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 27, 2023 7:29 PM |
r31 And you're a frau? Because this thread is about gay guys vis-à-vis straight ones. We all know most fraus walk fast, that's no mystery.
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 27, 2023 7:33 PM |
r33 No one said all gay men walks fast, just that many do, and disproportionately so when compared to straight guys. That's the mystery we're trying to crack here.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 27, 2023 7:39 PM |
I walk fast but that’s a NYC thing, not because I’m gay.
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 27, 2023 7:54 PM |
R34, I'd say it's not mysterious, it's just not a very good observation. I don't think gay men walk faster than straights. Many people walk fast. Many others walk slower. Gay and straight. I'm a gay man who walks fast, too fast for my husband, also a gay man. He's always telling me to slow down.
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 27, 2023 7:59 PM |
Walking is basically falling forward. I think that gay men, more so than straight, walk on their toes and thus the falling forward happens more quickly.
| by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 27, 2023 8:19 PM |
Why does DL not understand that a general statement about a group doesn’t mean it applies to all in the group. Of course, some gay dudes walk like their heterosexual brethren
| by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 28, 2023 12:29 AM |
Who cares if your gay nephew walks slowly? This is about general trends in a group, not individuals

R8, Same as widespread rumor that Lesbians like Bread Pudding and use canes.

R35 that's my favorite thing about visiting NYC. People MOVE.

I think black men walk slowest
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 28, 2023 9:37 AM |
OP, what she means is that when she's with straight men they regulate their speed to hers, because they are used to being with women, who generally have shorter legs and higher heels and therefore walk slower. Straight men want their attention so they get into the habit of walking in time with women when they are with them. I daresay they walk as fast as they like when they're not, but your female friend doesn't notice that because she's not there.
Gay men, who are not tuned into women's needs nearly so much, tend to hare off towards the destination without looking back to see if she's struggling, unless the pair are in a conversation that particularly engages the gay man (eg when the next production of Follies is coming on, or who her friend saw his partner with).
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 28, 2023 2:05 PM |
Quite the opposite. I've always walked slow. When I was in high school people actually used to shove me in the hallways to make me walk faster.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 28, 2023 2:08 PM |
Some do, because gay men are usually the prey.
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 28, 2023 2:20 PM |
The world isn't a safe place. Cars don't always stop just because there's a stop sign. There are criminals everywhere looking for someone to prey on. People who walk slow are dumb and oblivious to the many dangers around every corner. They think life is safe like Disneyland. Gay men are more intelligent, aware of danger.

[quote]I think black men walk slowest
I actually had a black guy purposely SLOW DOWN as he walked (or should I saw swaggered) in front of my moving car in a parking lot once--as if he was daring me to have a confrontation with him.
| by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 29, 2023 11:21 AM |
Be careful, R50^. Don’t confront. He will pull out a gun.
| by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 29, 2023 1:56 PM |
R50, as a black guy, I am not surprised. Generally, black people think walking fast is a white person thing, a corny thing. Part of black coolness is our walk, our swag, our hip confidence. We are in charge of our environment. If we’re late, we’re not gonna sweat it or rush. If we’re scared, we’re not gonna show it. Especially if we’re black men.

Live in NYC and am a fast walker. I feel like I’m a video game when I’m out walking. Have to avoid slow people, tourist, fast cars, catch quick trains. I only slow down if I see a hot guy with a hot ass. I’m also very slow when I’m vacation. But when I’m in the city and want to go somewhere, I want to be there quick.
| by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 29, 2023 2:31 PM |
R57, I dunno. Black people are pretty universally considered cool and hip, even in areas with a minuscule number of black people. Being unhurried, confident, and swag are part of our vine
