Am I the only one here watching this brilliant new show? Mental illness, a stalker, original songs, Broadway actors.... you'd think it would be DL catnip. Here's a song by Tovah Feldshuh playing Rebecca's insane mom from the latest episode.

I can't remember the last time I was this head-over-heels for a show. Check out the explicit versions of some of the songs on Youtube. The ones for "I give good parent" and "I'm so good at Yoga" are fucking FILTHY.

by Anonymousreply 2December 5, 2015 7:23 AM

And my favorite so far, although not explicit

Now can this thread get some traction?

by Anonymousreply 6January 11, 2016 2:01 AM

This is the first time I am aware this show exists. But then it IS on CW, so who outside their basis demographic of 13 year old girls can be expected to know of it.

by Anonymousreply 7January 11, 2016 2:14 AM

If it were 2008, that might be true. The CW is far more tiled toward superhero shows these days. The Monday line-up of JtV and CEG are now very off brand for them.

by Anonymousreply 8January 11, 2016 3:27 AM

Mine too R9! Let's get this thread rolling when the next new ep airs on 1/25!

by Anonymousreply 10January 11, 2016 6:12 AM

This is an insanely funny show. And the musical numbers are incorporated so beautifully, I can't remember another tv show that did it this well (yes, much better than Glee).

Someone should probably start a new thread, though, with a better title that won't look like someone bitching about relationship drama when people see it in the thread watcher column on the side.

Episodes 4-9 are available on the CW's site. Not sure if it's permitted here to link to a streaming site for the first three? Google show title and project free tv.

by Anonymousreply 11January 15, 2016 5:10 PM

It's all on Netflix too. Stumbled upon it, and I am laughing so hard. Smart comedy like this isn't so easy to find. This show ranks up there with GCB's and Wonderfalls as great shows that most likely will be cancelled after one season. Hopefully not, if people spread the word. With a little googling, I discovered the following. The head exec of the CW has publicly supported the show and said he loves it. The lead actress won a Golden Globe for her performance, the second ever for the network. Let's see what happens.

by Anonymousreply 12January 24, 2016 4:17 AM

[quote] The lead actress won a Golden Globe for her performance

DL'ers were pissed about that, it was stolen from their Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who needed yet another. And crazy ex-girl's a millennial too!!

by Anonymousreply 13January 24, 2016 4:29 AM

As much as I love JLD, this woman is hysterically great in the role.

by Anonymousreply 14January 24, 2016 4:45 AM

I'm offended by her giant gazongas that she keeps shoving in my face.

Put them away; I'm not a studio executive.

It must take her a full day to do a breast self-exam.

by Anonymousreply 15January 24, 2016 6:07 AM

Thought I wouldn't like it, but after the lead won all the awards, decided to check it out, and loved it! Watched every episode last weekend.

I watched it on Hulu, though. Didn't see it on Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 16January 24, 2016 6:15 AM

Will start binge watching it soon. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. Has it been renewed for a second season ? Is the music good ??

by Anonymousreply 17January 24, 2016 6:29 AM

Thank you for the recommendation. I will definitely check it out.

by Anonymousreply 18January 24, 2016 8:15 AM

It's hilarious and "omg I can't believe that on network tv", r17

by Anonymousreply 19January 24, 2016 8:22 AM

Just saw the first episode. It reminds me of Ally McBeal with the female, neurotic lead being a lawyer (starting in a new law firm to stalk her ex in his hometown) and the random musical numbers. Man, her crush, Josh, looks hot!

by Anonymousreply 20January 24, 2016 9:53 AM

How in the world could this be on Netflix? Netflix doesn't have episodes of any current season of shows. They can only get them after a season has finished, and sometimes not for years.

by Anonymousreply 21January 24, 2016 11:06 AM

It's on Hulu. I watched because of this thread, LOVE IT! So funny and the music is great!

I guess I'm alone here. Watched the first episode and hated it. Didn't go any further into it.

by Anonymousreply 24January 24, 2016 5:38 PM

I love love love this show. Dark and funny. "Face Your Fears" sing was a spot on parody of every Idol pop song ever sung.

by Anonymousreply 25January 24, 2016 5:50 PM

Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Crazy Ex Girl Friend, CW Crazy Ex Girlfriend. That's a sexist term.

by Anonymousreply 26January 24, 2016 6:27 PM

Rebecca's boss and White Josh are on course for a brojob in the new episode.

by Anonymousreply 27January 27, 2016 11:27 PM

My favorite musical number this season was actually Paula's sultry nightclub number when she was on a date with her "beau."

by Anonymousreply 28January 27, 2016 11:33 PM

Surprised it's taken DL so long to pick up on this show. I brought it up a long time ago when I saw the teaser for it but nobody was interested.

And why is literally NOBODY saying her name?

"The lead actress" ...

"The lead" ...

"her boobs"

REALLY?!??... HER NAME IS RACHEL BLOOM AND SHE IS FUCKING BRILLIANT -- she is the CO CREATOR of this show!!!

by Anonymousreply 29January 27, 2016 11:37 PM

Glad Allyson Hannigan got another show. She is consistently working, going from 7 years on Buffy to 9 years on How I Bed Your Mother to this.

by Anonymousreply 30January 27, 2016 11:49 PM

This is a good example of why need President Cruz. He'd ban this filth from the airwaves in 2 seconds flat.

by Anonymousreply 31January 28, 2016 12:07 AM

R21, Mea culpa, yes, it was Hulu I was watching. Assumed incorrectly. With Apple TV, I have a hard time remembering where exactly I am. Yes, Rachel Bloom, she's just not really known yet, so easy not to know her name. I think if this is picked up for a second season, she may well become known.

by Anonymousreply 32January 28, 2016 2:20 AM

Has one of my faves, Stephanie Weir, in a small role as a coworker.

by Anonymousreply 34January 28, 2016 6:00 PM

Not enough Donna Lynne Champlin in the last episode.

by Anonymousreply 35January 29, 2016 7:21 PM

I love this show, but I doubt it will get another season. The ratings are abysmal. MAYBE since Rachel Bloom is winning awards, and it's traction on Hulu, they might renew it...but I'm not getting my hopes up.

by Anonymousreply 36January 30, 2016 4:48 PM

You'd think with a beach episode they'd show a bare chest or two (other than White Josh) but nooooooooo. We're stuck on the bus the whole time.

I have to wonder why Valencia has not set her sights on some ambitious dentist or sales whiz or somebody who could keep her in the lifestyle to which she'd like to become accustomed, instead of fixating on poor, sweet, dumb Josh.

I like Greg, but he looks about 10 years older than his "boyhood" friends.

by Anonymousreply 37January 30, 2016 5:49 PM

The show is a mixed bag for me. On one hand it's so darn referential (the lead is basically a mashup of LIz Lemon and Jenna Maroney from 30 Rock and the neighbor girl is so Dalia Royce from Suburgatory in her line delivery) and it feels low budget at times, but the songs are pretty darn good and hilarious and Donna Lynne Champlin is great in this. I was about to give up on the show after watching the third episode but out of boredom I catched up on the other episodes and it pulled me in by the fourth episode.

by Anonymousreply 38January 31, 2016 9:05 PM

The actor that plays her crush is a terrible actor and so ugly. I don't understand why they would cast him. The guy that plays "white josh" is smoking hot tho.

by Anonymousreply 39February 1, 2016 11:13 AM

OMG this show picked up steam when I wasn't looking! Glad I started it and posted the vids - it worked for r22!

I haven't loved the songs since coming back, but last week's episode was stellar. I AM Rebecca (or was), especially when she walks out of the theater and sings the sad reprise of "I have friends." Fuck, I have been there. Song from this week's episode that totally rips apart girl groups.

by Anonymousreply 41February 3, 2016 5:53 PM

Is there a gay character on the show? or a possible gay character? can someone please tell me?

by Anonymousreply 42February 3, 2016 6:18 PM

Maybe a possible gay character, or two.

Why IS Valencia with Josh? Are his parents superrich? He doesn't show any kind of ambition and all he may be for her is an easy pushover, but why waste time on Josh when she could live the life of a Doctor's wife by now?

by Anonymousreply 43February 3, 2016 6:22 PM

Spoiler Alert:

Apparently White Josh is gay. He's hitting on Darryl Whitefeather, Rebecca's boss, in episode 10.

by Anonymousreply 44February 3, 2016 6:58 PM

"Put Yourself First" was the most effective and scathing mockery of how feminists justify to themselves being obsessed with assorted makeup and beauty shit.

[quote]He's hitting on Darryl Whitefeather, Rebecca's boss, in episode 10.

The two practically spat rainbows at each other when they first meet in episode 9.

by Anonymousreply 45February 3, 2016 7:18 PM

I think Josh being the hot guy that all the girls like is also part of the show's upending of rom-com/male/female relationships. He's cute but not the hottest, he's sweet and non-threatening and not the rich douche type that often wins the girls. The show is super smart but I can see it has the potential to fly over so many heads...

I think Josh is hot, too. It's one of the few things the show got right from the start.

by Anonymousreply 48February 3, 2016 8:52 PM

Greg is hotter than Josh and who the show is pushing for her to be with. He's perfect for her and can sing but she can't see it.

by Anonymousreply 49February 3, 2016 9:11 PM

I also love that the white Josh only exists in comparison to Josh. Usually we see things like "He's the Asian version of X," which makes CEG all the more subversive.

I don't see Put Yourself First as a critique of feminism but instead of the pseudo feminism that so many girl power groups push.

So glad this thread is taking off.

Are we sure that Valencia isn't a Datalounger?

by Anonymousreply 51February 3, 2016 9:46 PM

[quote]I don't see Put Yourself First as a critique of feminism but instead of the pseudo feminism that so many girl power groups push.

I said it was a critique of a subgroup of feminists engaging in certain behaviors, not a critique of feminism itself. There are plenty of feminists who are sincerely committed to all sorts of feminist goals but when it comes to not bending over backwards to make themselves as pretty as possible they fail miserably and this is exactly the excuse they use to convince themselves it's not a failure to fight the patriarchy - I'm doing it for myself! It makes me feel good and more confident! It has nothing to do with the male gaze! Your more honest feminists will admit, yeah, they're failing in this regard but they've only got so much fight to give and they're picking their battles. I thought the song was representing that more honest feminist viewpoint while calling out the women who are deluding themselves.

Where is "here" anyway? It's hell, and Rebecca's getting damn tired of making frequent guest appearances to belt out her "Stupid Bitch" anthem on the Sammy Maudlin show in hell.

Agreed r53, one of my favorites. And I am going to make it a personal anthem because it's one of a kind. Laughing at yourself but also reminding yourself you can do so much better. It's a great song, but I'm a little tired of belting it out too.

I'm going to start a YouTube playlist for the show, I think they're all there. Too bad there's no soundtrack album, but the YouTube videos have the video too. I've never started a YouTube playlist, this show's inspired me to do it. The last two episodes have killed, Rachel completely deserved the GG and the Emmys are still coming, right? It should be showered with Emmys, sorry JLD.

r56 is saving himself for Jon-Erik Hexum. Not on this week, bummer. This was the best cliffhanger yet. How's the "stupid bitch" going to get out of this one?

by Anonymousreply 59February 16, 2016 5:56 AM

CW didn't want to compete opposite the Grammys, which was probably smart. The show is slowly building ratings momentum - up to a 0.4 in adults. Doesn't sound like much, but it was at a 0.3 for every episode this season (except the second of third which slipped to a 0.2), so two episodes in a row at a 0.4 is encouraging. If we can hit one 0.5 before the end of the season, I think it's got a shot!

by Anonymousreply 60February 16, 2016 6:17 AM

It's finally back, I guess I really loved the last few episodes because I've never been more into the show. Crazy and the OJ thing are probably my two favorite shows currently airing.

by Anonymousreply 61February 22, 2016 7:17 PM

Getting closer now, I think I can download 2 hrs from now here. But I might want to take a nap first, if they'd stop hammering downstairs. The show's such an adrenaline rush when it's hitting on all cylinders as it has been recently.

by Anonymousreply 62February 23, 2016 12:36 AM

I had a friend named Jeff once....

by Anonymousreply 63February 23, 2016 1:12 AM

So.. what happened in the new episode?

by Anonymousreply 64February 23, 2016 10:34 PM

White Josh came out as gay and had sex with Old Gay Daryl.

by Anonymousreply 65February 24, 2016 2:45 AM

I actually haven't seen it yet. Saved it until I was better rested, and had a few drinks and a joint don't hurt. Listening to music now, but I'll put it on next before OJ.

by Anonymousreply 67February 24, 2016 2:49 AM

White Josh and Daryl kissed but weren't shown having sex. I think WJ would let Daryl down easy but not have sex with him. The actor who plays Daryl was in a commercial recently where he appeared shirtless and he's not someone a buff trainer like WJ would go for.

by Anonymousreply 68February 25, 2016 9:20 PM

White Josh's just a nice guy who was encouraging Daryl to come out. The kiss was just in the spirit of friendliness. I don't think Daryl has fixated on WJ because of it, it'll just be forgotten. WJ just came out (to the audience,) wait a bit for them to set him up with someone. Hopefully played romantically in the spirit of the show.

by Anonymousreply 69February 25, 2016 9:30 PM

Netflix paid for the pilot, but then passed on it. So they shopped it around to all the cable networks and were turned down. Then someone thought to try CW because they thought it could be nicely paired with Jane the Virgin. And they do have them airing back to back. So is Jane a really good show too? What do people think of that? I download everything and haven't seen it yet.

by Anonymousreply 70February 25, 2016 10:53 PM

HAs this show been renewed for a second season?

by Anonymousreply 71February 25, 2016 11:49 PM

No, cancelled. Low ratings.

by Anonymousreply 72February 26, 2016 12:42 AM

That's not actually confirmed, but the ratings are bad. Tied with Jane the Virgin, but for some reason TvByTheNumbers says Jane is a toss-up, while they're saying Crazy is likely cancelled. At least we'll have the 20 episodes, I've saved all the ones I've downloaded.

by Anonymousreply 73February 26, 2016 12:50 AM

CeG and JTV are the best one-two punch on network TV, which I can't believe I'm typing given that they're both on the CW. JTV is a whole lot of fun to watch. It stumbled a bit coming into season 2, but once they dropped the love triangle, it picked right back up. CeG is close to my heart because I've been championing it to all of my friends since watching the bizarre pilot, but I love both shows equally. Definitely give it a shot. It's definitely sweet and innocent in a lot of ways, and not raunchy at all like CeG can be, but just as funny and heartfelt.

Showtime originally developed CeG, then passed on it. It was developed at a half-hour, so the CW expanded it to an hour. Ratings for CeG and JtV are very low, but they get tons of critical attention (Jane made countless top-10 best lists in 2015) and have those Golden Globe awards in their pocket. That means a lot to the CW. Nothing else they do gets any sort of attention.

I wouldn't be surprised if Crazy gets a Peabody for its realistic treatment of mental health issues - You Stupid Bitch is worthy of a Peabody alone.

by Anonymousreply 74February 26, 2016 5:43 AM

I dropped this show after few Ep. I'm so sick that female lead keep shoving her big boobs at my face.

by Anonymousreply 75February 26, 2016 6:43 AM

[quote]I wouldn't be surprised if Crazy gets a Peabody for its realistic treatment of mental health issues

What mental health issues? Sure, she's so broken inside but she's not really crazy. That's why I hate the title of the show, Crazy Ex Girlfriend. That's a sexist term. It's easy to just call any woman with a crush crazy. The situation's a lot more nuanced than that. If it was a man, you would call it romantic, not C-R-A-Z-Y.

by Anonymousreply 76February 26, 2016 2:08 PM

They're aware of the sexist tropes of romcoms and are intentionally subverting them. It was part of revamping the show after Netflix (?) maybe Showtime paid for the pilot and then passed on it. Originally it was half hour sitcom length. Then CW decided they wanted it hour length, and Rachel Bloom was teamed with whoever, the showrunner or whoever is her partner in this, who is a feminist and she's the one especially pushing the feminist spin. My first impression of the title was that it'd be a sexist bro show beleaguered by a crazy ex. But of course, that isn't what it's about at all. Watch some interviews with Rachel Bloom explaining what they're doing.

by Anonymousreply 77February 26, 2016 2:19 PM

Title character, creator of show, star, Golden Globe winner.

by Anonymousreply 79February 26, 2016 2:24 PM

I think her name is Rebecca Bunch, not Bloom.

by Anonymousreply 80February 26, 2016 2:26 PM

And I'm referring to the actual actress.

by Anonymousreply 81February 26, 2016 2:27 PM

What kind of a name is Bunch? Jewish?

by Anonymousreply 82February 26, 2016 2:27 PM

I know her mom's Jewish, one of the best production numbers was her mom barging in as the ultimate hypercritical Jewish mom stereotype.

Tonight's episode was perfection. The rap battle, the Les Miserable anthem, the kiss.

by Anonymousreply 91March 1, 2016 2:32 AM

I'd definitely put the JAP Rap Battle in my top 5.

by Anonymousreply 92March 1, 2016 4:17 AM

Watched the last two episodes tonight. So great. This show really grew on me. The music has been so good. Like Darryl and White Josh. Kinda love this show!

by Anonymousreply 93March 1, 2016 4:59 AM

There's never been anything like it, except Glee, but they used actual pop songs instead of original, comical, compositions and took itself too seriously. An occasional, especially musical episode of SCTV might be a good comparison. Just as funny and surreal, but their musical numbers were often purposefully bad for comic effect, and Crazy's music is always performed to perfection.

by Anonymousreply 94March 1, 2016 5:13 AM

Whenever I think of the Stupid Bitch song, I literally laugh my ass off. And I glad to see there's other people who relate to it. We're all stupid bitches on a regular basis. The new hit. I loved how they made ordinary office ceiling lights create a beautiful and futuristic set. The suits were sexy, I'm seriously turned on by clean-cut guys in suits dancing really well. James Marsden as Corny Collins, dancing and singing in Hairspray, turned me on so much it made me melt.

by Anonymousreply 109March 8, 2016 3:34 AM

It was on tonight with a couple of killer songs, including "I'm the villain in my own story." Or something like that.

by Anonymousreply 110March 8, 2016 6:30 AM

Yeah it was actually on, I panicked because this site I check to remind me what's on that day, didn't list it. A glitch, they usually do, they list every show. Another home run episode, there's always a chance critical praise and maybe some Emmys will get it saved on a streaming network. Fingers crossed. They preempted it for the Grammies, I'll be seriously bummed if they ever do it again.

by Anonymousreply 111March 8, 2016 8:18 AM

I download too because my CW signal is super weak and always gets pixilated. The episode didn't go live on torrents until after midnight.

Not my favourite of the season, but I loved the Disney song. I really, really hope at least Bloom can get an Emmy nomination.

by Anonymousreply 112March 8, 2016 8:46 AM

Re cunt - it was actually "Or you're dead, see? Word." Both explicit and broadcast versions used the same language at the end. The biggest variation I've seen is I Give Good Parent - very explicit. Good at Yoga is actually better clean.

by Anonymousreply 115March 11, 2016 11:08 PM

I love this show and am glad that this and JtV were re-newed.

by Anonymousreply 116March 12, 2016 3:13 AM

I'll have to re watch the "I give good parent" song. I'm not in the US and censorship around swearing and sexual content isn't as tight. I don't know what version I saw. I don't remember it being explicit but I could be desensitised.

by Anonymousreply 117March 12, 2016 3:44 AM

Yea!!!!!! Thanks, R114, so glad it's renewed!!!!!! Really, the only thing I watch besides the People Vs. O.J. on TV!!!

by Anonymousreply 118March 12, 2016 5:40 AM

Where do you see that it's renewed?

by Anonymousreply 119March 12, 2016 9:20 AM

I'm so happy they got renewed. I like the show.

by Anonymousreply 121March 12, 2016 7:05 PM

Ugh I have the theme song stuck in my head.

"She's so broken insiiiide....."

by Anonymousreply 122March 12, 2016 9:20 PM

r117, you definitely didn't see the explicit version. It's probably the most explicit version of any song they've done

by Anonymousreply 123March 14, 2016 2:19 AM

This show is insane. Love it!

I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

by Anonymousreply 124March 15, 2016 1:55 AM

There's a lot more crazy on the way. The CW has renewed their low-rated musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend for a second season for the 2016-17 network television season.

Huzzah

by Anonymousreply 125March 15, 2016 2:44 AM

Wait, was that the season finale?

by Anonymousreply 126March 15, 2016 1:54 PM

No. There are 5 left - it's back next week.

by Anonymousreply 127March 17, 2016 6:57 AM

r123 I googled the explicit version. You're right, they didn't play that version.

by Anonymousreply 128March 17, 2016 8:05 AM

It got renewed for its acclaim of course, just like UnReal on Lifetime. The CW likes having an acclaimed show, and Lifetime also wants to be taken more seriously. Lucky for discerning viewers these factors come into play.

by Anonymousreply 130March 18, 2016 2:58 AM

Another perfect episode, after the 3rd preemption after the Christmas break. Surely we'll get the last 4 or 5 episodes in a row now.

by Anonymousreply 131April 12, 2016 10:32 PM

Ok, checking Wiki, looks like this will be an 18 episode season. So next week will be the season one finale. I'll watch all the season one episodes at least once again before season 2.

by Anonymousreply 132April 12, 2016 10:44 PM

I loved the UTI song this week.

by Anonymousreply 133April 16, 2016 11:35 PM

Love the show, but she kinda lost me a bit when she shot blood outa her vajayjay. EEEEEWWWW.

by Anonymousreply 134April 16, 2016 11:39 PM

Greg is too old and too doughy to be much of a love interest. It beggars belief that he and Josh were school friends together, unless Josh was in first grade and Greg the eighth.

by Anonymousreply 135April 17, 2016 11:08 AM

Santino Fontana is recently married.

Greg was sexy singing that song, bragging that he'd given her a UTI, in his baritone voice. They're doing the "friend who was always there, but now she sees him as a love interest" rom-com trope. He's obviously going to fuck it up by playing hard to get. Josh loves Rebecca now because he realizes she's one of the few people who truly respects him. But Greg is a lot smarter, like Rebecca , so that would be a better match. It'll have to come to a head somehow in the finale, can't wait.

by Anonymousreply 138April 18, 2016 12:33 PM

Love this show. Josh is so perfectly sexy in everything he does. JAP Battle should win an award on its own. Some of the episodes are inconsistent but there is no doubt it is brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 139April 18, 2016 12:59 PM

I'm so happy the CW is giving this show a second season. The finale was awesome. The look on Josh Chan's face, at the end, classic!

by Anonymousreply 140April 19, 2016 2:15 AM

Love that Paula got her own number tonight. Her last one, at the night club with the date, was one of my faves.

I thought Josh sort of knew that Rebecca had moved for him.

Greg is too fucked up emotionally to have a girlfriend.

White Josh had too many clothes on tonight.

by Anonymousreply 141April 19, 2016 6:50 AM

So Becks got so pulverized by Greg's 'capacious' dick that she ended up in the hospital with a broken twat, yet she was able to have wild car-sex with Josh shortly thereafter? Like throwing a matchstick through the Lincoln Tunnel? Poor Joshie.

Loved hearing Lea Salonga, as always. When White Josh took Darryl's hand, this cynical old fool got misty-eyed.

by Anonymousreply 143April 20, 2016 4:04 PM

R140 I wasn't sure if the look on his face meant he was weirded out or he's just kind of a commitment phobe. I know he was with Valencia for 10 years or whatever and he still didn't want to marry her.

But yeah there's no way Josh Chan can pretend to be naive about how nuts Becks is at this point. He's caught her too many times in things she couldn't explain. I thought he liked her because she accepted him for who he is and that made him overlook her flaws, so the look didn't really make sense unless he was just deluding himself before and now he can't anymore.

by Anonymousreply 144April 20, 2016 10:44 PM

That actor who plays Paula has such an unusual mushy but big head and jowly under-neck. He's very odd.

by Anonymousreply 145April 23, 2016 1:04 PM

Two, I also love this show too. Love.

by Anonymousreply 146April 23, 2016 1:05 PM

I'm at episode 14.

The problem I am having is that I like the characters for the most part but the lead character is deeply unsympathetic and frightening, as written. I like the actress and the performance. The character is bat shit crazy. And trying to be a home wrecker. The songs help take me out of the plotting and story and remember its all ironic, all post-modern comment on how silly our lives are and how silly tv is, etc., but still. Bitch be cray.

In that regard, it has a lot in common with Girls. Though girls, every character is repulsive, but also very funny. But cray and disturbing.

These are very black comedies.

by Anonymousreply 147April 23, 2016 1:15 PM

I hate hate hate this show. So amateurish and unfunny.

by Anonymousreply 148April 23, 2016 1:17 PM

It see,s as though everyone involved with this show knew each other beforehand imtimately. I'm wondering how I can get my daughter involved in this close-knit ensemble of talent? She said to me earlier this week, "Mommy, how can I parlay my YouTube success into appearing on a hit show on the CW?". I kid you not. Now, I know that Becks had similar success on YouTube, although I did NOT know she was also a leading attorney in NYC. At any rate, I would love to see my daughter participate in Season 2 of this show. I can see her as a possible romantic partner for Greg, now that he and Becks are no longer. Now granted, my daughter Estrellita is only 12, but with some makeup and the appropriate costuming she could easily pass for late teens - early 20's. I used a similar technique in dressing her when she played "Velma" two years ago (when she was 10) at the Poconos Playhouse production of CHICAGO. The gal who played Roxie was in her mid-30's. Very unusual casting, but you know, as a Mother who cannot get in the way of her daughter's natural talent, well, what was I to do? Any tips or thoughts would be appreciated!

by Anonymousreply 149April 23, 2016 4:07 PM

I started watching this on Netflix and I'm hooked. I needed something fluffy and silly to watch this summer, and it hits the spot. Paula is like a composite of every frau stereotype ever mentioned on DL. The musical numbers are hit & miss, but some of them are really clever.

by Anonymousreply 150July 15, 2016 3:39 AM

Not even nominated. Next.

by Anonymousreply 151July 15, 2016 4:06 AM

4 noms in total, r151. A CW record.

by Anonymousreply 152July 31, 2016 7:07 AM

That bitch is cray! I love this show too! It seems like everyone is discovering it on Netflix this summer.

by Anonymousreply 153July 31, 2016 9:17 AM

I like this show, but they make the actress playing Valencia out to be way more attractive than she actually is.

In any other show, she'd be the busted one, and in this one, she's the person who the main character wants to be.

by Anonymousreply 154July 31, 2016 10:14 AM

The actess who plays Valencia would be more attractive than the character of Valencia than she really is.

by Anonymousreply 155July 31, 2016 2:43 PM

Thank god, r53. I've been waiting since the first episode for it to catch on. It should be an iconic DL show.

by Anonymousreply 156July 31, 2016 4:05 PM

[quote]There's never been anything like it, except Glee, but they used actual pop songs instead of original, comical, compositions and took itself too seriously. An occasional, especially musical episode of SCTV might be a good comparison. Just as funny and surreal, but their musical numbers were often purposefully bad for comic effect, and Crazy's music is always performed to perfection.

Flight of the Conchords was another show that used original comedic music very creatively. I'm glad that CEG keeps the songs down to a couple per episode. Not all of them are keepers, in my opinion. But many are catchy & still get stuck in my head after finishing the season.

by Anonymousreply 157July 31, 2016 7:49 PM

I don't get the appeal of Josh Chan, but that just plays into the fact that Rebecca's love for him isn't rational.

My love for Santino is rational, especially when he kills 1776.

by Anonymousreply 158July 31, 2016 8:23 PM

Obviously the cast was chosen on their talent not their looks. It's also quite a diverse cast which I didn't immediately notice probably because they're so talented. No Valencia isn't especially attractive, but it's refreshing to see someone other than a blonde bimbo who can barely sing get the part. The show as a whole rejects many TV rules, for starters the lead actress isn't thin, the best friend isn't thin or young, the love interest is Asian, the neighbor is Indian and the most attractive guy on the show is gay and yet people continued to watch it. The Hollywood execs who rejected the show initially probably needed a lie down and Valium after realising that.

by Anonymousreply 159July 31, 2016 9:52 PM

I read an interview with Rachel Bloom and she said they have a 4 year plan for the show. I know it was renewed for S2, but I wonder if CW will keep it if it continues to be a ratings flop. Hopefully Netflix will pick it up if it gets canceled.

by Anonymousreply 160July 31, 2016 10:14 PM

I'm so glad it's on netflix now. I missed the first couple of episodes.

by Anonymousreply 161August 1, 2016 5:04 AM

People don't like girls, they're still 2nd class citizens.

by Anonymousreply 162August 1, 2016 5:44 AM

r162 - Truer words was never spoken. Not very smart, too.

by Anonymousreply 163August 1, 2016 10:58 AM

Plus it features DL fave Tovah Feldshuh in her best role in years!

by Anonymousreply 164August 1, 2016 11:12 AM

R159, I get what you're saying it's just a little distracting when it comes to Valencia because everyone is going on and on about how hot she is, and she looks like a foot.

by Anonymousreply 165August 1, 2016 12:03 PM

Yes, r165, but a hot foot. Is Santino bi? And hairy?

by Anonymousreply 166August 3, 2016 12:27 PM

I agree r165 she's not at all attractive. And it is distracting that they keep going on about how hot she is. Maybe she's better looking in real life but doesn't look that great on TV. I had an actor friend like that years ago. Incredibly hot in real life, mildly attractive on TV. Personally I think the next door neighbour is the best looking girl on the show but thats never mentioned.

No idea if Santino is bi, but he's married to a woman r166.

by Anonymousreply 167August 3, 2016 12:39 PM

But she is way out of Josh's league and the relationship doesn't make much sense since she could shack up with a rich doctor instead of a jock with no ambition. I love Valencia's song about girls needing to stick together. It's like Datalounge in a nutshell (if it were more passive agressive instead of outright pointless bitchy).

by Anonymousreply 168August 3, 2016 12:47 PM

I like Santino but he looks as if he's about 10 years older than everybody else. I'm assuming the bangs are supposed to hide his receding hairline. The guy who plays his dad on the show, Robin Thomas, was a real hunk back in the day. If I recall correctly, he's the one who knocked up Murphy Brown.

by Anonymousreply 169August 3, 2016 4:39 PM

Sometimes the "She's so broken inside" from the show's opening credits song comes to my mind and I feel the urge to giggle.

by Anonymousreply 171August 3, 2016 5:19 PM

With Santino's background in musical theater, i wonder if he can do the splits?

by Anonymousreply 172September 1, 2016 8:23 PM

I love that everyone on the show is either weird, broken, alcoholic, in denial, narcissistic, or obsessed.

Except the gay gym rat, who is the most stable and emotionally wise character on the show.

by Anonymousreply 174September 2, 2016 12:41 AM

C'mon, you guys just love it because there's a dialogue arc built around a grocers' apostrophe.

by Anonymousreply 175January 18, 2017 6:04 AM

Santino Rice is 34. Is he supposed to be playing 24 on the show?

by Anonymousreply 176January 18, 2017 9:51 AM

Rice hasn't been on the show in months. Greg is the only character I can stand other than White Josh, so this year has kind of sucked.

by Anonymousreply 177January 18, 2017 12:18 PM

Is Greg ever coming back? I wonder why he left. The actor, that is.

by Anonymousreply 178January 18, 2017 1:03 PM

Rice went to star in Sisters.

by Anonymousreply 179January 18, 2017 1:48 PM

He was allegedly hell on set and everyone hated him.

by Anonymousreply 180January 18, 2017 1:53 PM

Isn't it Santino Fontana?

by Anonymousreply 182January 18, 2017 2:05 PM

Rice was the only one who could sing. He was on Broadway and Frozen. That Josh Chan can't sing for shit.

by Anonymousreply 183January 18, 2017 2:11 PM

Santino Fontana. He played Greg. I have never heard anything bad about him. That is surprising to hear.

by Anonymousreply 184January 18, 2017 2:15 PM

Renewed for a 3rd Season...yay!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 185January 18, 2017 2:54 PM

I'm glad Greg is gone. He was too hammy. Interesting to read he's done Broadway because his performance seemed to theaterish for tv.

by Anonymousreply 187January 18, 2017 5:54 PM

Wait, are we talking about Santino Rice or Stanino Fontana? I heard that Santino Rice was a diva on set, and everyone did hate him, but everyone loved Santio Fontina and every body loved him.

by Anonymousreply 188January 26, 2017 11:21 PM

Fontana left because he'd only signed a one-year contract (no one knew if the show would be picked up for further seasons) and had arranged other projects during the hiatus. The producers graciously let him go. (Plus, love triangle plots are tough to sustain for extended periods of time.) Who knows, he may return as an occasional guest star like Tovah.

Meanwhile, White Josh has been sorely missed for the last couple of episodes. And there are only two episodes left for this season.

by Anonymousreply 189January 26, 2017 11:33 PM

Is Santino Fontana hairy? I'd love to do him - especially if he has hairy legs.

by Anonymousreply 190January 27, 2017 11:41 AM

Only 2 episodes left? Is this a short season? I didn't even know the new season started and it's already over.

by Anonymousreply 192January 28, 2017 8:15 PM

Yeah, R192, the CW cut the show's order from 18 episodes last year to 13 this year.

by Anonymousreply 193January 28, 2017 8:38 PM

Rachel Bloom said she had mapped out 4 seasons of the show. So wouldn't Greg leaving mess up this master plan?

by Anonymousreply 194January 28, 2017 8:42 PM

This show needs to be moved to Netflix or Hulu. It's going to die on the CW.

by Anonymousreply 195January 29, 2017 12:47 AM

The finale disappointed me. It didn't resolve anything, although it presented itself as though Rachel found the key to happiness. Writing music does not preclude you from other aspects of life; it is no different than running a bagel shop. It is just something you do, not who you are. I loved some of the characters and actors, and hope they go on to further careers. Donna Lynn Champlan (sp?) was fantastic, and I did see her on Another Period, briefly, but I hope she gets a lot more work. I adored her spaced out room mate, the mixed race girl who ended up managing the bar. I hope she gets more work. And white Josh could not have been more adorable.

by Anonymousreply 197January 6, 2020 2:35 PM

I'm WAY late to the party here--I don't know why I missed this show on its original run--probably because it was on the CW, which I never watch. But I just finished bingeing all four seasons of it and it was INCREDIBLE. The musical numbers were so impressive and well-placed in the show. And I'd never heard of most of the actors other than Santino Fontana and Skylar Astin. (And Tovah, of course--but she wasn't a regular.)

Another reason I should've watched it sooner -- I live VERY close to West Covina. And my little suburb actually got a shout-out in one episode.

by Anonymousreply 198February 17, 2021 3:30 AM

I'll confess, every four months or so, I watch the whole thing all over again.

by Anonymousreply 199February 17, 2021 4:14 AM

I missed half the first season because after all, it WAS on the CW, Perhaps it was this very thread that showed me back then what I was missing. Wonderful show and much missed.

[quote] the mixed race girl who ended up managing the bar. I hope she gets more work.

I suppose you mean Vella Lovell. She is currently a supporting player on Mr Mayor with Ted Danson. I doubt that gig will last long.

I give CW credit for keeping it on air for so many seasons. People had it pegged as being canceled after a few episodes, its first season.

It was a great show and Bloom really delivered some amazing original songs. I'm surprised she isn't in demand as, say, Tina Fey.

by Anonymousreply 201February 17, 2021 5:09 AM

I just watched the first episode and am loving it. I guess I am 5 years late.
