Two reasons... the leadership process is always grassroots driven, so only party loyalists, kooks, and other no hopers select the leader. Purity tends to come into it, for the right and the left. The factions within the ranks will spend all their time on internal fights and undercut their credibility. The media will eat it up and report it and the harmful shitshow will make the Conservatives look good in comparison. In the end I don't think Canadians want particularly grand visions. They want competence and sensible compassion. That's why federally the more centrist Liberal party has won so many elections and is still called the natural governing party. Personally, when I vote, I vote Liberal. It's the safest bet. I'm not voting this election, nor are a number of my friends, because Trudeau's such a dipshit.

I talked a to consultant friend last night who, despite (and with great reluctance) is doing public consultations in more rural Ontario. He said the volatility and anger there, especially about Torontonians who've left this nightmare of a city and driven up real estate and other prices in the process, is huge.

They are making their calculation on the polls - and obviously nuanced polling that we will never see - but I predict two things: the most volatile election and electorate in a long time and, at the end, another minority. The country still has a government. It's just in an election campaign to determine the next parliament, which could result in a change of government.

What the poet does Sunday is ask the Governor General to dissolve the current parliament for an election. If Parliament needed to be summoned again by the Governor General.

The so-called caretaker convention came into effect when the election is called. Under our Westminster system, during an election campaign the government must refrain from making significant decisions related to policy, spending or appointments. The routine business of government goes ahead, managed largely by the public service. In case of a national emergency, a caretaker government can take action, but it's expected to do so in consultation with the opposition parties. Why? Because during an election it is unclear whether a government enjoys the confidence of the House of Commons – the acid test for governance in Canada.

It's actually not a good point. It is a woeful ignorance on behalf of someone purporting to speak with knowledge about government in Canada.

I'm not buying into the conservative boogeyman that the Liberals always try and skate by on, especially since this election is not necessary. My aunt and cousins are sick of it too, and she lives in a currently conservative riding that is showing a tight race between Libs and Cons.

I do not hate Trudeau, I think he's been a "just okay" PM. I hate the rabid online trolls that make up shit about him when there is plenty of legitimate things to criticize him on. Those are the issues that I care about and that's how I'm going to vote. Why do Canadians always settle for mediocrity? "Meh, Justin isn't that great, but he's better than so and so." I'm done with that shit.

Look at it this way, IF, the Liberals lose, then maybe, just maybe, they'd learn a lesson and change. Would suck for now, but might be better for the long run. People have to demand better.

The popular vote is also more narrow, but because of the electoral system a party only needs about 35% of the popular vote to get all the power. If we had a more proportional system, we'd likely more often than not have NDP-Liberal coalition governments. This is why Trudeau failed at his promise at electoral reform. If we switched to a more representative system, the Liberals (Nor the conservatives) would ever hold majority power again.

I hate O'Toole, but I don't think he'd be as bad as Harper. Hopefully we don't have to find out. I hate Michelle Rempel too, but she is very pro-gay, so there's that at least. There's always going to be wing-nuts with the Cons, though I suspect some of the lunatic vote has gone to Max. My old Liberal MP used to tell me she loved Max, lol.

Patrick Brown disqualified from Conservative leadership race

With two months to go before the Conservative Party chooses its next leader, Patrick Brown has been ejected from the race over allegations he broke financing rules.

Brown's campaign quickly fired back, saying in a statement early Wednesday that his disqualification is unfounded and an attempt to ensure his rival Pierre Poilievre wins the race. It added it would consult its legal team.

The bombshell news came in a statement released late Tuesday night by the party's leadership election organizing committee, which said Brown was being disqualified from the race after "serious allegations of wrongdoing" related to financing rules.

"We regret having to take these steps but we have an obligation to ensure that both our party's rules and federal law are respected by all candidates and campaign teams," said the statement from Ian Brodie, head of the Conservative Party's Leadership Election Organizing Committee, which oversees the race.

Those involved did their best to be fair to Brown and his campaign, Brodie said, giving them time to substantively refute the allegations.

"None of these problems has any impact on the integrity of the vote itself," he said, adding the party will share the information it has with Elections Canada.

Is her boss a misogynist dick? Maybe, maybe not. Did it have anything to do with her dismissal? Again-maybe, maybe not. It probably had more to do with a power struggle. She had no problem with this system for the what 30+yrs of her broadcast career. That includes not being able to unilaterally change your appearance. Like it or not, that matters to ratings and that's well known. I can think of two other white, male personalities who were subject to this. The idea that she's being "classy" about this is just bullshit--she's letting others fight her battles, because she's hedging her bets. She also knows that the entire system is rotten and that she was a part of it for decades. It wouldn't be good for her future career to be in a twitter exchange with someone who points that out.

In fairness, I hate Lisa LaFlamme as an anchor and her phony, patronizing comments at the end of news segments, but I still think the above is fair comment.

Chrystia Freeland doesn't seem ready to take over as leader, and there's no guarantee that any of the other Liberal contenders could do better than Trudeau.
