A Hamptons Refuge of Historic Modesty

The WSJ just did a great sales piece on this Seven Sisters property. I'm coming around to the idea of the Hamptons and the articles stress this is not your 10 bedroom, ostentatious manse. A lovely seaside, quiet home, that was beautifully rebuilt in 1997. Ask: $34 million, what say you DL?

Beautiful home- but those prices are insane. It is disgusting there are that many people who can plop down millions of dollars in real estate in Manhattan and the Hamptons.

Even for beachfront, I'd say it is 5x overpriced. The Hamptons aren't even that pretty really.

Where are all the cool and artsy people moving to?

It's a beautiful house. I'd like to pick it up and put it down somewhere on the coast of Maine (and watch the price drop to under $500k.)

Only 3,800 square feet? Tear-down.

Time for the revolution. Whole towns filled with multi million dollar mansions that are used a few weeks a year - while there is a massive homelessness and unaffordable housing crisis. Bring out the guillotines.

The kitchen is dreadful. I'm very disappointed.

The Hamptons are so flat and serious.

Wow, really not impressed. The grey is awful and the lack of any landscaping or gardening around the house is disconcerting.

With that hilly slope and austere landscape I'm reminded of Christina's World.

All that glossy grey woodwork looks like plastic. (maybe it is?)

That's a house BUILT in 1997. We have discussed it before. The original burnt down.

Dick Cavett's house named Tick Hall burned down in 1997 and was rebuilt. This one also burned down the same year?

Doesn't hold a candle to Tick Hall. Now for the rock bottom price of 33M down from 62M.

The buyer will tear it down and build at least 10,000 sqft of house. For that money, no one wants “cozy”.

$16.5 million and it doesn't even have a garage for your automobile. No thanks.

And there's the cheap appliances in the kitchen.

I'm guessing that the house comes with some sort of covenant that prohibits any demolition or major alterations. The Montauk Association Historic District ( which covers the Seven Sisters) probably has regulations governing landscaping and other matters that guarantee a certain harmonization of appearance among the 7 houses.

The fireplace has dirtied the wall above; I won't be able to place my TV there.

Montaul used to be a vacation community for working class & middle class families and sports fishermen. It turned not a nightspot for the young 1-10%. Why? Because it is walkable and bike able. You coukd get puss drunk and not get arrested for drunk driving. That started around 2009. It seemed to happen virtually overnight.

Now Uber picks up the drunken sots and chauffeurs them around. It's really sad because the visitors used to be such nice, down to earth people. Now it's worse than the Hamptons because there are still some motels with lots of rooms to hold drunks whereas hotels and motels in the Hamptins are restricted. Motels in Montauk are right on the beach. In the Hamptons, billionaires houses are in the beach. .

The Gosman family sold several of its motels and is selling its dock area, which has restaurants and a few shops. It used to be a fun shopping area but the Gosmans raised the rents so high that the good shops folded. The entire dock area is going to be torn down.

I used to stay at a 2 bedroom coop in Montauk. The studios sold for about $125k until about 2009. Now they sell for over $700k. They have ocean views.

The whole East End of Long Island has become one of the most vulgar places in the country. I'm glad I experienced it before the people who drove Hummers turned up. All the best people go upstate,

I think the point of these houses were that it's not your snobby nouveau-riche estates. You get the beauty of the East end, with a bit of humbleness.....for $16-34MM.
